COURSE INSTRUCTOR
COURSE DESCRIPTION
  • Sports and competitive performance have become a rite of passage for many young Americans. Recently, the media has made us aware of some of the difficulties these athletes face dealing with the pressure of performance, academics, social media, and identity. This course is designed to teach athletes how to become more resilient under stress, how to find their own identity, and how to subdue their mind and make it work for them, not against them. Iron Minds Jr. will be offered for athletes ages 13 - 17.

  • Week 6: Exploring Athletic Identity

COURSE FORMAT
  • Each weekly session last 60 minutes. At the end of each session, Tory will share follow up resources to provide a deeper understanding of the session topic. This course will be held exclusively online for the purpose of supporting multiple athletes while also providing a level of anonymity for those who have questions but are uncomfortable asking them in a group format.
  • Each weekly session will wrap up using the 3-2-1 critical thinking concept. Each athlete will be expected to submit an email response using the 3-2-1 critical thinking concept: Provide 3 things that stood out to them during the session. Explain 2 ways that they can apply it daily. What 1 question does it prompt them to ask themselves?
COURSE SPECIFICS
  • Access- The content of this will be provided exclusively online. To access the group sessions, attendees will need to download the Zoom app. Attendees will need the meeting id to join a session whereby you must be invited by the instructor to obtain the id.
  • Content- This course is designed for athletes aged 13 to 17. The content will be scaled to their level of life experience, maturity, and development. Topics to be discussed include mental health, confidence, composure, competitiveness, commitment, and athletic identity. Supplemental readings and resources will accompany each session to provide additional insight and depth on each topic.
  • Anonymity- Anonymity and confidentiality are highly regarded in each session. Attendees are not allowed to discuss who attended the sessions but are free to discuss the topics with family and friends. When attendees join a session, they will create a screen name using their initials and their favorite number followed by @imjr (e.g. TR13@imjr). All attendees will have the option of using video or audio only while participating in the group sessions.
  • Feedback- At the end of each session, there will be time for attendees to ask questions or present ideas about the session topic. Furthermore, attendees will be asked to email the instructor each week using the 3-2-1 critical thinking method to process and apply each week’s topic. Each email will receive a response and acknowledgement of their contribution to the discussion.
  • Behavior- This is an online group course designed for growth and achievement. Attendees are expected to add value not become distractions. If an attendee becomes a distraction to the group, he/she will be removed and barred from attending further sessions without refund.
